Acai fruit bowls are an old tradition in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Even though the acai berry has been consumed for hundreds of years in the Northern states of Brasil such as Para, Amazonas, Maranhao, Amapa, etc. it was in Rio de Janeiro where acai gained a lot of publicity in the late 80's. The acai bowl, which is becoming very popular these days around the World, was created in Rio de Janeiro around 1987 in a famous beach community called Copacabana. In Copacabana acai was mixed for the first time with fresh fruit and guarana for a healthy and energetic meal, which was heavily used by famous jiu-jitsu fighters, surfers and sports practitioners in Rio.
