Our journey with coconut water started long time ago, around the same time we started consuming acai back home in Rio. Coconut water has always been part of our lifestyle growing up in Rio, even before the acai boom, coconut water was already present in every corner of Rio, as a natural and delicious way to quench our thirst. Around the 90′s other parts of the country that are far from the coast started consuming lots of coconut water due to the new way of distributing the coconut water in a shelf-stable manner: tetrapak packaging. Even though this packaging is very efficient for distribution, consumers definitely loose a lot on the taste profile and experience.

Acai Capsules

Our capsules are made with pure organic freeze dried acai powder, and unlike many acai extracts in the market (which normally have carriers such as maltodextrin) are extracted with heat processes, which cooks all the antioxidants, and have no benefit. The fruit

The fruit itself is a small round dark purple drupe that grows in slender palm trees. The acai fruit has about 1 inch of diameter, being about 90% of the volume in seed, and the other 10% comes from the skinny pulp that surrounds the seed. The fruit comes in branched clusters carrying anywhere from 500 to 900 fruits per cluster.

Sustainability: in the roots of the acai fruit

The acai fruit is an important and renewable resource to the local communities in the Amazon. The harvest process is 100% sustainable and renewable, and it provides important income to the “ribeirinhos” (how the local population that lives by the delta are known). Today with the increasing demand both nationally (it is estimated that 90% of the harvested acai stays in Brasil) and internationally the acai became a real sustainable solution for the Amazon, as it produces and retains resources for the local population. Acai Roots supports and sources only 100% sustainable, organic and fair trade acai crops. All of our purchases are done through local cooperatives formed by local “ribeirinhos” that harvest the fruit and deliver to our facilities for processing.

The acai fruit tree

The acai tree is a palm tree that grows from 40 to 90 ft. It is a thin slender palm tree, that is also used in the Amazon for extraction of hearts of palm. Even though the Jussara palm tree is much more used for the hearts of palm (because it is a much thicker palm tree and produces a lot more hearts of palm), the acai tree is used by the “ribeirinhos”, especially when “manejo” techniques are utilized to maximize the acai production in certain areas. Besides the fruit acai, and hearts of palm, the seeds of the acai are also used for many applications such as jewelry, natural charcoal, etc. The leaves of the tree are not only used to make the “peconha” (laces used to climb the tree), but it is used as a natural fiber and “ribeirinhos” produce “cestos” and other handcrafted utilities.

The acai berry is a dark purple small berry that grows in palm trees in the Amazon rain forest. Known for its high antioxidant content the berry has been used in Brasil for hundreds of years, and recently has been brought to the US. Recently the acai berry has been infused in many weight loss products that claim rapid weight loss on a combination of acai berry extract and a cleanser. We at Acai Roots do not see acai as a weight loss product, we believe the benefits of acai go far beyond loosing weight. The acai berry has a long history in the deep Brazilian rain forest. There are records that date hundreds of years ago, but it is believed this incredible fruit has been consumed in the Amazon by the tribes for thousands of years. The berry though only started being known in the Southern parts of Brasil (Rio, SP, etc) in the late 70′s and eary 80′s when Para locals started taking acai along with other Northern fruits such as caja, cupuacu among others to Rio de Janeiro. In Rio acai found its place. In a city that breathes health and active lifestyle acai gained the right endorsement of the gracie family, and was an instant hit in all juice bars across town. Soon surfers, capoeiristas, jiu-jitsu practiotiners picked up on the acai trend, and it became a “carioca” fever, anywhere, everywhere you go there is acai. The trend soon became a national trend spreading from the Rio Grande do Sul coast to the Northeast, and now internationally! We are so happy to be part of this story since the beginning in Rio!
